Asian Girls Ignite
Asian Girls Ignite (AGI) was founded in October 2020 to create spaces of belonging where Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) girls and gender-expansive youth are seen, celebrated, and supported for exactly who they are: powerful, confident, and full of potential. Co-founders Joanne Liu and Mehgan Yen grew up in different cities but shared the same experience of feeling invisible and unheard as AANHPI girls. Both faced racism and microaggressions that left lasting impacts. Mehgan was bullied in middle school for “looking like a dragon,” while Joanne was once told by a friend, “Sometimes I forget you’re Asian.” These moments of erasure and exclusion left them longing for a space where they could feel proud of their identities. Years later, they came together to build the very community they had once needed.
Our Middle School, High School, Outdoors, Summer, and Mentorship offerings center cultural identity, storytelling, and leadership. Youth explore their heritage, build confidence, and grow as community leaders. Through shared meals from local AANHPI-owned restaurants, hands-on workshops, and intergenerational mentorship, they deepen pride in their identities and feel seen and celebrated. AGI affirms youth voices and values, fostering identity exploration and a strong sense of belonging. This foundation cultivates personal agency by empowering youth to speak up and lead with confidence to shape their futures. In Colorado, where AANHPI communities make up less than 5% of the population, AGI offers the space and support to be fully seen, valued, and powerful.
AGI’s mission is to cultivate spaces where AANHPI girls and gender-expansive youth in grades 6–12 can explore and celebrate their identities, build meaningful connections, and grow into leaders grounded in culture and community. We believe our youth already carry the wisdom and strength to lead bold futures. Our role is to provide them with tools, support, and opportunities they need to rise and thrive.
